Tom Dumoulin to return to full training in November.

Tom Dumoulin said he hopes to return to regular training in November as he recovers from knee surgery he underwent after crashing at this year's Giro d'Italia.

According to the Dutch website Wielerflits.nl, Dumoulin told the "Live Slow Ride Fast" podcast of former Sunweb teammate and current CCC team member Laurens ten Dam that although he currently only runs two to three hours a day, said he hopes to get back to regular training soon. [Dumoulin said, "Two weeks ago, my knee tendon got inflamed when I overdid it.

"But I'm looking to increase the intensity of my training rather than the time. I can climb pretty fast again, but it still hurts to strain my knee when I turn a corner. Hopefully come November I'll be able to use my knee fully again."

After crashing on stage 4 of this year's Giro d'Italia, Dumoulin retired from the race on stage 5, but felt well enough to recover for the Criterium du Dauphiné in June. However, continued pain in his knee forced him to retire after six stages of the French race and he has not raced since; he opted to undergo surgery in late June, which forced him to miss the Tour de France, one of his main goals this year.

In mid-August, it was announced that Dumoulin would be leaving Sunweb at the end of the season, having joined as Argos-Shimano in 2012. In the meantime, the 28-year-old won the 2017 Giro and finished second in both the Giro and Tour in 2018.

In 2020, Dumoulin is set to join the Dutch WorldTour team Jumbo Visma, which includes this year's Vuelta a España winner Primoz Roglic and young Belgian star Wout van Aert, and Dumoulin is Dumoulin is eager to return to racing.

"For the next few years, this injury might do me some good," Dumoulin told Tendam.

"I know where I want to go again. I'm hungry again."
