The Catalan cycling community is mourning the death of 23-year-old Modesto Capel of Team Compac Campo Claro. The region's time trial champion was killed in a collision with a vehicle while training in the province of Garrotxa.

According to Radio Olot, Capel was training with another rider on the narrow GI-524 when their wheels collided and Capel fell into oncoming traffic. The driver in the oncoming lane failed to stop in time and collided with Capel.

Capel, from Torregrossa, was airlifted to Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona in critical condition, but died of his injuries on Thursday.

Following Capel's death, organizers of La Volta Ciclista a la Galloccia have suspended the first stage of this weekend's race.
