Matteo Trentin (opens in new tab) (Mitchelton Scott (opens in new tab)) spoke about Alvaro Hodeg (Deceuninck-Quick Step) crashing (opens in new tab) in the finale of the Tour de Euro Metropole (opens in new tab) on Saturday. Open in new tab), he spoke about the dangers of protruding barrier legs after suffering a serious injury.

The Colombian was exiting the last corner of the race when he hit Barrier's leg, sending him flying out into the road. He was later transported to the hospital with fractures to his left forearm, right shoulder, and two ribs.

"The problem is not just [that race]," Trentin posted on Twitter. 'I've run other races at 60+ mph. That kind of (barrier) should be banned everywhere."

"Just look at the dangers at the World Championships and this year's Grand Tour time trial. Flat-foot barriers are everywhere in the world."

Trentin emphasized the relative insignificance of the issue, which is often legislated by the UCI, in contrast to the rider safety issues highlighted by Hodeg's crash.

"But most importantly, however, the sock length, the disqualifications that happen all the time (mention of Nils Eekhoff at the World Championships (opens in new tab) - Editor), the ban on feeds from cars in the last 20 km of races, the ban on race radios at the World Championships, the 45x45 cm bans on cutting numbers, punctuality of team presentations which are always late, etc."

.

Jacopo Guarnieri of Grupama-FDJ also asked the UCI, "Why are there still falls like Hodeg's?

Hodeg's fall is not the first accident in recent years in which a barrier foot has protruded: in the first stage of the Tour of Luxembourg in June, Justin Jules (Wallonie Bruxelles) was in the sprint finish, a few meters from the finish line He was injured when he clipped the barrier's foot a few meters from the finish line, and Sam Bennett (Beulah Hansgrohe) criticized the barrier at the Bink Bank Tour in August.

Five years ago, Zdenek Stival (Deceuninck-Quick Step) appealed to the UCI to ban protruding barriers (open in new tab) after crashing at the Eneco Tour and suffering serious facial injuries. However, they are still used in races from the pro to junior levels.
