Ed Maas seriously injured after colliding with a car at Piccolo Lombardia.

Ed Maas (Development Team Sunweb) suffered serious injuries, fracturing his neck, back, and face, after colliding with a car on the track at Piccolo Lombardia on Sunday.

The Dutch rider was taken to a hospital in Milan where he was sedated and will receive further treatment.

"Ed is currently sedated, stable and non-life threatening. He has sustained fractures to his neck, back, and face. We are continuing further investigation to determine the full extent of his injuries," a statement from the team said.

Maas crashed on the descent of the Madonna del Ghisallo at the 126 km mark of the 176 km race. According to the team statement, Maas collided with a car entering the parcours. He was immediately transported to a hospital in Milan.

Maas is currently sedated until doctors can determine the extent of his injuries and begin treatment. Team Sunweb doctors are scheduled to arrive on Monday.

"This is all the information currently available and we ask that you respect the family's privacy throughout this difficult time. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available." Team Sunweb Family sends our thoughts, prayers and strength to Edo and his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."

French rider Edouard Bonnefoy elaborated a bit more on the crash on Twitter, explaining that he was one of the few witnesses.

"I was chasing with him to join the group on the downhill. A car came from the right and crossed the road. I don't know how that is possible. The driver was out of his own driveway and probably did not see us. It was a terrible accident, about 70 km/h," Bonnefoy wrote.

"There were only two of us, so the only witnesses might have been a few spectators. ...... We avoided hitting the car at the last minute and were just about to turn a corner, so we didn't really know what was going on. ...... We send our courage and thoughts to Edo. We hope he comes back soon."[17
