Tom Dumoulin will target the 2020 Tour de France and the Olympics, and will not make another attempt at the Giro d'Italia's Maria Rosa.
The 2017 Giro winner recently told Nos that he thinks the proximity of the Olympics and the Tour is not a problem and that his preparation will be completely focused on those two events.
The 28-year-old Dutch rider, who has become a regular rider after recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him from the Tour, Vuelta, and UCI Road World Championships, spoke with Nos in Maastricht.
"My recovery from the knee injury is going as expected and I hope to compete in the Tour de France and the Olympics next season. He said.
Dumoulin's 2019 season was derailed by a major crash on stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia, which ultimately forced him to abandon the race due to knee pain. After a hasty return, he competed in the Criterium du Dauphiné, but abandoned the race before the start of stage 7, ending his season in June and straining his relationship with Team Sunweb.
The Dutchman and the German team parted ways in August, and he signed a contract with Dutch team Jambovisma through 2022.
"This rest period has made me think," Dumoulin told Nos. I want to be the best I can be on the bike for another five, six, or even seven years, and that feeling is stronger than ever."
Dumoulin said that "I am very happy to be back on the bike.
Dumoulin told Noth that his training is going well, including a four-hour mountain ride with his soon-to-be teammate, time trial specialist Jos van Emden.
Dumoulin's first major goal for 2020, the Tour de France, will end on July 19, with the Tokyo event starting just five days later.
"It's not the most ideal scenario," he said, but "I'm sure we can combine the Tour and the Olympics."
