Former road racing world champion Rui Costa has renewed his contract with UAE Team Emirates for two seasons, completing the 30-rider WorldTour team for 2020.
Costa won the 2013 road race world championship in Florence, Italy, defeating Spaniards Joaquim Rodriguez and Alejandro Valverde. At the time, the Portuguese rider was Valverde's trade teammate at Movistar, but Costa moved to Lampre-Merida in 2014 and morphed into UAE Team Emirates in 2017.
Now 33, Costa won two stages in the Tour de France just before winning the world championship, adding to the Tour stage win he earned in 2011. After becoming world champion, Costa also won the Tour de Suisse for the third time overall, with his most recent victory coming at the 2017 Abu Dhabi Tour, where he also won a stage.
"One of my priorities was to have continuity in my future as a rider, so I am grateful to UAE Team Emirates for giving me the opportunity to work with them towards my goal," Costa said in a press release
"The trust from the whole team It's a great boost to have the trust of the whole team and I'm really happy to continue being a part of the great cycling project that is UAE Team Emirates."
In the same press release, Costa said, "I'm very happy to have been given the opportunity to work with them.
In the same press release, the team also announced the signing of 21-year-old Italian Alessandro Covi from the Continental team Team Colpac.
"I can't wait for this new cycling challenge. I'm happy to be taking on a challenge with a big team like UAE Team Emirates, with great champions."
"The team has great faith in its young riders and I think I am in a great place to reach my goal of giving my best."
Other riders include Joe Dombrowski from EF Education First, Davide Formolo from Bora Hansgrohe, Brandon McNulty from Rally UHC, and under-23 time trial world champion from Hagens Berman Aktion and Mikkel Bjerg will join for next season.
