While Primoz Roglic celebrated Jumbo Visma's 50th win of the season at Tre Valli Varesine, many of his biggest rivals chased the TV bike off the course on a fast downhill, losing their chance at success, and suppressing their anger at the farcical finale All they could do was laugh it off.
Roglic won the race after a perfectly timed solo attack in the final kilometer. It was a stunning victory, but he admitted that he was lucky. With 15km to go, Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates), Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida), Eddie Dunbar (Team Ineos), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Michael Woods (EF Education First), Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), Davide Formolo (Bora-Hansgrohe) and several others were 40 seconds behind the attackers, and Roglic was in the chase peloton.
The race seemed to be slipping out of Jumbo Visma's hands, but suddenly the big names failed to make a sharp right-hand turn at 65 km/h on the downhill and dropped out of contention. The peloton caught lone attacker Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana), and Roglic surged alone, taking advantage of the hard work of Team Ineos.
"Let's say we make one more lap to the lake ......" Nibali said sarcastically, but opted to climb out in the last kilometer and head for the Bahrain-Merida team bus.
Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) applauded in bemusement as he crossed the finish line.
Hours before the race, Dan Martin had taken to social networking sites to address the road book as "the most useless double-page spread in road book history," not knowing that his tweets would bounce back on him. Martin told Cyclingnews after the race, "I'm not sure how I could have done that. It's a shame because it was a strong group with some of the best riders. "If you overcomplicate the circuit, you end up with a criterium. I don't think a pro race should become a criterium. It happened when I was going 65km/h. I had to be careful not to get hit from behind. You have to be careful not to get hit from behind and it takes time to turn around. I knew I had lost my chance to win"
.
Nibali, who showered after the race, was able to laugh off the fiasco. He was glad to be home for a few days before ending his season on Saturday at Il Lombardia. Unfortunately," he said, "things like this can happen. I was fast," he said. The speed was fast, the TV heat went straight ahead, and there was nothing to indicate a corner route. I know this road a little bit, and when I went straight I thought I was going the wrong way," he said. But TV Moto was convinced it was the right road and kept going. But it was the wrong road, and we were almost at the lake. ......" He continued. Too bad," he said. Tre Valli Varesine was always a good race, but they started playing around with the route."
