Veteran sprinter Andre Greipel could join young Dutch star Mathieu van der Pol and his 2020 team Corendon Circus, a Belgian newspaper reported. The 37-year-old German rider is a French team, Arkea Samsic out of his contract for next year, but is not expected to announce his future plans until early November.
Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad said Wednesday on its website nieuwsblad.be that Greipel is not contemplating retirement, but rather that after a quiet season by his standards, he will be looking for a new team next season (this year's Amstel Gold winner, Van Del Pole's Corendon Circus), suggesting that he is looking to start his career by joining the team.
The Belgian team is set to ride bikes from German brand Canyon in 2020, so the German connection could be key. Former professional rider Michael Ricci (a close friend of Greipel's according to nieuwsblad.be) works as a consultant for Canyon. In addition, Alpecin Shampoo, a co-sponsor of Katusha Alpecin this season, is also German and will be joining Corendon Circus next season.
However, South African World Tour team Dimension Data is also rumored to be interested in acquiring Greipel.
In a joint announcement with Arkea Samsic last week, Greipel made no mention of retirement and said he would announce his future decision after spending the vacations with his family.
"Until the beginning of November, my social media accounts will be silent and I will not be able to respond to media requests," said Greipel, an 11-time Tour de France stage winner. 'During the week of November 4-10, I will inform you about the 2020 cycling season.'
