Adam Yates continues to perform well in time for Il Lombardia

Adam Yates is hoping his late-season success will continue all the way to the finish line at Il Lombardia on the shores of Lake Como on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Englishman will be supported by a strong Mitchelton Scott team that includes Jack Hague, Esteban Chavez, Mikel Nieve, Damien Howson, and Tsgab Gourmay. Chavez won Il Lombardia in 2016, and Haig finished third in Wednesday's Milan-Torino behind Yates' main rivals in Il Lombardia, Michael Woods (EF Education First) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) (Movistar).

Yates endured a frustrating 2019 season, but never lost hope of turning things around. He won stages at the Volta a Catalunya and the Tour of the Basque Country in the spring, but racing has been sparse since he struggled to compete in the overall Tour de France.

However, he won an important mountain stage in the CRO race in Croatia and also showed strength in Milan-Torino. The season is almost over, but Yates is improving in the second half of the season.

"He proved last week that he has form with his wins in Croatia and here. Now I just need to keep the legs going for Saturday," Yates told Cycling News. [It's hard to get in shape this time of year, but I've been working hard to win whenever possible. Hopefully, the results will come in the end."

Yates and Haig showed strength in numbers on their climb to the Milano-Torino Superga, and Mitchelton Scott is hoping to do the same in Lombardia. They hope to have four riders in the crucial selection that is expected to form on the steep slopes of Muro di Solmano. Chavez and Neve will control the attack on the Civiglio, allowing Yates and Haig to attack before San Fermo della Battaglia, which overlooks the finish in Como, and on the final climb.

Yates is pleased with his performance in Milan-Torino, but knows that Lombardia, with its major climbs, testing descents, and 243 km race distance, is a much tougher race. Lombardia is a race where I have struggled in the past to find my best condition. [Lombardia is a race where I have struggled to find my best conditions in the past. But after the last few races, I feel that the conditions are right and I hope that this is the year I can make a difference in the finale. But we just have to give it our all on the day."
