Esteban Chaves has signed a two-year contract extension with Mitchelton Scott. The deal will keep the 29-year-old Chaves with the team he has been with for the past seven years through the end of the 2021 season.

Chaves, a two-time GranTour podium finisher and 2016 Il Lombardia winner, agreed to a deal with Mitchelton-Scott early in the season and was already working on a deal before this year's Vuelta a España.

"I am really happy. I always have a good feeling with this organization, the team, my friends, everyone, it's like a big family, so I'm happy to be here for another two years," Chaves said in a statement released by the team.

The 2019 season was all about Chaves trying to rebuild his career after two consecutive difficult campaigns plagued by illness and injury; he missed most of 2018 due to a virus, but returned this year with an impressive victory in a mountain stage at the Giro d'Italia. His attempt at the Vuelta a España fell short in the second week, but the Colombian is happy with the way 2019 has unfolded.

"I am happy with the 2019 season. The team really looked after me from the beginning and gave me confidence. My experience this year was great and I am working step by step to get back to my best level."

Mitchelton Scott gave Chaves a chance in 2014, right after suffering a career-threatening injury. He had the best few years of his career with the team and intends to repay that trust in the next two years.

"I want to continue to build stories with the team, as I have in the past, help new players, and continue to learn from the older guys. I want to continue to contribute to this organization."

Michlon Scott has not yet announced or finalized his Grand Tour plans for 2020, but it is likely that Chaves will once again share a key support role in leadership and either or both of the Yates brothers. Matt White, who signed Chaves several years ago, believes the 29-year-old's 2019 progress shows he can find his best form in the future.

"For Esteban, there are a lot of positives to take from this season. His health has been really good this year and if he can get back to a level where he can compete, I know he can win any race on the calendar," White said.

"Esteban is eager to achieve more goals in different areas and we could see some surprises on his calendar next year."
