Roger de Vlaeminck was hospitalized Saturday for a fever, according to Belgian reports. According to Belgian press reports, the former professional cyclist will remain at the AZ Alma treatment center in Yclo, Belgium, for 48 hours to undergo further tests on his heart and lungs.
"On Friday evening I already felt cold," de Flemmink told Het Nieuwsbald.
"Saturday morning I still didn't feel well; I had a fever of 39 degrees and decided to go to the hospital.""I had to stay there for 48 hours for a full examination of my heart and lungs. They want to do a complete workup on me to determine the cause of my malaise."
Het Nieuwsbald reported that a virus in the blood may have caused the fever, but that still has to be confirmed by a doctor.
"All things considered, things are going well now," de Vlaeminck said. 'The fever is down and I have no pain. I do have a little soreness in my neck muscles, though."
On Monday, Het Nieuwsblad reported that five-time Tour de France winner Eddy Merckx was also hospitalized. The Belgian suffered a head injury after falling while cycling.
The paper said that the 74-year-old Merckx, who uses a pacemaker, was undergoing careful treatment but was transferred to a regular ward on Monday after further tests.
