Matt White The Back End of the 2020 Tour de France is Very Hard, but the Hard Work Begins Soon

Commenting on the 2020 Tour de France route unveiled in Paris on Tuesday, Mitchelton-Scott sport director Matt White said he liked the course and that it suited a team that is "versatile and aggressive."

"We were hoping for a bit more distance in the time trial and a bit more elevation, but in general it's a good route," he said on the team's website.

For a team like Mitchelton-Scott, which uses riders like Simon Yates, Adam Yates, and Esteban Chaves (perhaps all three), fewer time trials might be a good thing. While none of the riders are particularly strong on the clock, they are all top-notch climbers, and the last 6km of the 36km individual time trial is at least suitable for them, as is the 6km climb at the end.

"It's 30km of flat and 6km of climbing," White said of stage 20 from Relais to La Planche des Belle Fils, the final stage of the 2020 Tour." The race wants to be competitive, and I think the course design has the potential to have that effect."

The route for the 2020 Tour seems to have something for everyone throughout the three weeks, rather than being flat in the opening week, followed by gradually bigger climbs in the second and third weeks.

"Typically, the first week, starting in northern France, has five or six sprint stages, controlled by the sprinter teams.

"For the main riders and GC contenders, the days of fighting through the Tour de France are over, so it won't have much impact. By the time the first selection day of the Tour de France arrives, they will arrive at the Tour in 95% condition and ready to go."

"What will change is that the majority of the peloton will be out of GC contention fairly early on, which will give the teams more control and we will see an aggressive racing style.

Adam Yates did not challenge for GC as expected at last year's Tour, but his twin brother and 2018 Vuelta a España champion Simon Yates won twice, and Daryl Impey and Matteo Trentin also won stages, making the team The team had its most successful Tour in history.

It remains to be seen whether the team will go all in on Simon or Adam in 2020, or support both, but Chaves has riders who finished on the podium at both the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España in 2016. Also on the team is Mikel Nieve. A veteran of 18 Grand Tour appearances, finishing in the top 10 overall six of those times and taking stage wins in both the Giro and Vuelta, the 35-year-old Spaniard is often used as a domestique de luxe in Grand Tours, but he is also capable of finishing in the upper echelon.

"I think this is a great route for a team that is versatile and can race aggressively.

"The difficulties during the race are very sporadic and scattered throughout the route. There is a 4000 meter climb in stage 2 and the first hilltop finish in stage 4. ...... The second half of the Tour is very hard, but the difficulties start right away. So it's tough."
