Michael Hepburn has signed a two-year contract extension with Mitchelton Scott to remain with the team through the end of the 2021 season. Hepburn has been a member of GreenEdge since the team's formation in 2012. [Hepburn said in a statement released by the team on Friday, "I have been a member of the team since its inception.
"All of the riders and staff feel like a family environment to me.
Hepburn, 28, has a strong background in time trial and Pursuit, winning six world titles in track and a silver medal in Team Pursuit at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. In recent seasons, Hepburn has established himself as a firm supporter of Mitchelton Scott's overall class leadership.
"There are riders who have won Grand Tour stages, there are riders who have won Grand Tours, and there are several other riders who are capable of making the podium in big races, so I see my role as a support rider for them," Hepburn said. [In the last four or five years, the team's targets and goals have changed dramatically, with young riders developing into some of the best GC riders in the world. We all know what we do and it's really fun to be part of the engine room."
Hepburn supported Adam Yates in this year's Tour de France. Director Matt White said that Hepburn, a Brisbane native, has developed into Mitchelton-Scott's road captain during his time with the team.
"He is an integral part of the team and enjoys winning. He is still relatively young, but he knows how this team works and really wants to transition into that role.
"There are some older guys on the team who hopefully will finish their careers with us, but there are a lot of guys on the team younger than him and he is a player who can lead by example on and off the bike."
