Enric Mas is one of many riders bidding farewell to his current team at the Tour of Guangxi. After a week in China, his three years with Detuning Quickstep have come to an end, and the 24-year-old is already looking to the future and the off-season.
Mas will race from the Volta Ao Algarve through October and will be without a win this season unless he wins the Hilltop finish on stage 4. Despite his ambition at the start of the season, his debut in the Tour de France ended in a disappointing 22nd place. This season could be the perfect time for a change of pace.
"It hasn't been my best year because I haven't won yet," the soft-spoken Spaniard told Cycling News in the North Sea. 'Next year will be a new chapter in my life because I'm changing teams. Next year
"I'm going to do something with the GC. I'm a little tired after this season, but we're here.
Mas will join Movistar next season on a three-year contract and will be racing for the Spanish team for the first time since joining the U23 Fundación Alberto Contador team in 2015.
Mas, who finished second in the 2018 Vuelta a España and proved himself as Quick Step's overall class rider, has three Grand Tour wins with the departed trio of Nairo Quintana, Richard Carapaz, and Mikel Landa and their Spanish team The team is expected to fill the gap left by the
Given the contrasting focus of the teams, the move would be a significant change. Movistar is more focused on stage racing, and Mas has the advantage of being back "at home" culturally.
"I've really enjoyed my time at Quick Step. 'Being here for a few years I've learned a lot about how they work and everything. I want to say thank you to everyone. They helped me learn.
"A lot of things have influenced [me]. One important thing is that Movistar is a Spanish team. And Spaniards are a bit different, they have a special character. When we tell jokes, sometimes we understand them even if others don't. This is one of the reasons."
Mas added that the team has friends, including neighbors in the small Duchy of Andorra in the Pyrenees.
"Also because I know people from Andorra in Movistar, like Valverde and Soler, and that's part of the reason for the focus on GC. I think if you want to do well in GC in the Grand Tours, you need a team around you."
