Ruben Guerreiro joined EF Education First on a two-year contract after Katusha Alpecin decided to end its activities at the end of 2019. Katusha Alpecin's license at the World Tour level will be taken over by the Israel Cycling Academy until 2020, but many of Katusha's riders still have a long way to go. However, the 25-year-old rider from Portugal, who finished in the top five twice and 17th overall at the Vuelta a España, has earned a contract with an American team.
Before spending a year with Katusha-Alpecin, Guerreiro spent two years with Trek-Segafredo and two more with the U23 team Hagens Bellman Axion. For Guerreiro, the move to EF Education First is like coming home.
"At Axeon I grew as a U23 rider. I learned English on the team. For me this is a homecoming. America is my second country and I'm really happy to be back on an American team called EF Education First.
"This year was my first time riding the Vuelta and I was surprised at how good I am. I'm really looking forward to continuing to grow as a Grand Tour rider." According to Jonathan Vaughters, his rookie turned down his first contract offer during the Vuelta.
"Ruben is bold, but I can back that up. During contract negotiations he said he would not accept my offer and that he deserved more. He said he would watch the Vuelta the next day and show me. I didn't win a stage, but I finished second. I was very impressed." Guerreiro's 2020 race program is not yet set, but he is already eyeing the Tour of California. In that case, he would not be able to compete in the Giro d'Italia, but could make his debut in the Tour de France or return to the Vuelta a España. California is part of the world I want to go to," he said. I've only been there once, on the Amgen Tour of California. I want to go back. I don't know why. I don't know why. I just know that I want to go back and I want to have a good race there."
