The UCI announced Monday that it has imposed a provisional suspension on Spain's Raul Alarcon for a possible anti-doping rule violation. The 33-year-old Alarcon is currently with the professional continental team W52-FC Porto and is under contract through 2020.
Alarcon is listed on the UCI website under provisional ineligibility records. He is listed as having an adverse analytical finding/possible ADRV related to the use of prohibited methods and/or prohibited substances. No sample dates are listed.
Alarcon has been racing in W52-FC Porto since 2015. He is a two-time winner of Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta (2017 and 2018), but did not go for the triple crown in August and has not raced since June.
According to a recent report by Cicloweb.it, Alarcon has been injured this season, which has hindered his attempt to defend his title.
Alarcon began his career with Saunier Duval in 2007, but has raced at the continental level since 2009, except this year when W52-FC Porto was racing at the pro-continental level. He has won the overall titles at the Vuelta Asturias (2017) and the Grande Premio de Portugal (2018), as well as stage wins at the Vuelta Asturias (2017) and the Vuelta Ciclista Comunidad de Madrid (2017).
Alarcon's only UCI class win prior to 2017 was a stage at the 2013 Volta a Portugal.
