Organizers of the UAE Tour have announced that the seven-day race will return in 2020 as the second leg of the World Tour. The race is scheduled to start in Dubai on February 23 and end in Abu Dhabi on February 29.
"The UAE Tour is the only UCI World Tour race in the Middle East and is a perfect example of how we can host an elite sporting event and thereby showcase the region to the world. Said Mohammed Haleb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council, in a press release, "It is a great achievement to be part of the team that is organizing the first UAE Tour and we have been developing the second edition to make it even more exciting."
The UAE Tour race organizers, the Sports Councils of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, along with RCS Sport, organizers of the Giro d'Italia, announced the 2020 UAE Tour dates at an official presentation on Monday.
RCS Sport announced limited details of the 2020 UAE Tour. However, organizers stated that next year's race will visit seven emirates: Dubai, Fujairah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. According to the press release, the route also offers opportunities for sprinters, time triallists, and climbers.
The first edition of the UAE Tour took place in 2019 after the merger of the Abu Dhabi Tour and Dubai Tour. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma) took the overall win ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and David Gaudou (Groupama-FDJ).
"The first UAE Tour has been received very favorably by riders, teams, viewers, sponsors, and broadcasters around the world," said RCS Sport and Cycling Director Mauro Veni.
"After last year's race, I am pleased to introduce our work together for 2020 and our new starting and finishing points. I would like to thank our partners Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Sharjah Sports Council for their trust."
