Georgia Williams has signed a one-year extension with the Mitchelton Scott team through 2020, marking her fourth consecutive season with the team. The New Zealand time trial champion said she was not satisfied with her overall performance this season, but hopes for a stronger performance next year.
"I was really happy to sign the contract and I was always nervous about what the management and staff were thinking, especially since I didn't do so well this year.
Williams won the national time trial in January and placed seventh in the road race. She was a support for the Mitchelton-Scott team in the classics and summer stage races, but was unable to make the podium herself.
"It's been a bit of a rough season, but I'm looking forward to putting it behind me, refocusing, proving myself, and making up for a not so good year," Williams said.
Team director Martin Vestby acknowledged Williams' setbacks during 2019, but believes she has the potential to improve her climbing and be valuable in the Classic.
"Georgia has had quite a troubled season, but we still see potential in her climbing ability and her role as a strong domestique in some hard races. It's just a matter of getting her in the right place and having a season without setbacks."
Williams will look to defend her title in the time trial at the New Zealand championships in January and improve her road racing record before heading to Europe in the spring.
"It would be cool to win the TT and road races at the national championships, and for the European races I want to be a good supporter at the Ardennes Classic," she said.
Mitchelton-Scott announced the new additions of Jessica Roberts (NeoPro), Sophie de Vuyst (Parkhotel Valkenburg), and Janneke Ensing (WNT-Rotor). Returning riders include world champion Annemiek van Fruten, Gracie Elvin, Grace Brown, Lucy Kennedy, Jessica Allen, and Moniek Tenigro.
Both men and women have already met each other at end-of-season training camps before starting for 2020. Said Tennigro: "It's been really exciting meeting all the new riders at the training camps. They are all really nice people and it will be fun to race with different riders, learn from them, and learn from them," Williams said.
