Van Avermaet tops the UCI One-Day Race World Ranking.

Greg Van Avermaat (CCC Team) took first place in the UCI One-Day Race World Ranking, ahead of Alex Christophe (UAE Team Emirates) and Julien Alaphilippe (Detunink-Quickstep). Van Avermaert finished the season with 2,350 points, Christophe with 2,074, and Alaphilippe with 1,847.

The top of the standings changed hands several times during the season, with Oliver Naessen (AG2R La Mondiale), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), and Van Avermaet all leading at different points in the season. However, at the end of a consistently strong season, Van Avermaet pushed his rivals aside by winning the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal and finishing third in the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec. The Olympic road champion also finished second in the Classica Cyclista San Sebastian and sixth in the Bretagne Classic.

"I've always said I'm not one of those guys who wins 20 races a year, but I'm always up there in every race. I'm disappointed to miss out on a big Classic win this year. But winning the Classics is a really hard race and leg strength alone is not enough. If I had won one of the Classics, my season would have been completely different. So I was really happy to win in Montreal, it reminded me that I still have the ability to win after coming so close to big wins all year," said Van Avermaat in a statement released by the CCC team.

"I am happy to finish the season at the top of the UCI One-Day Race World Ranking. I think it shows what kind of rider I am and my ability to compete in most of the one-day races, and I hope to keep it up in 2020 and translate some of these podiums into wins."

Juan Avermaat led the CCC team line throughout the campaign and was the team's main man in both the spring classics and the Tour de France. He finished second in the Omloop Het Nieuwslblad and third in the E3 BinckBank Classic, but missed a big win until Canada in September.

Team manager Jim Ochowicz praised the leader.

"Greg Van Avermaat is one of the best and most consistent Classic riders in the world, and finishing the season at the top of the UCI One-Day Race world rankings proves it. Greg is a fighter and every time he lines up at the start line, he lines up to fight to the finish. Greg may not have had a big win in this year's Spring Classics, but he has been in the lead in almost every race, and leading this ranking ahead of multiple one-day race winners proves it," said Ochowicz. Greg's win in Montreal was important for him, his team, and his sponsors." Greg had great performances in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian, where he finished second, and in the E3 BinckBank Classic and Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec, where he finished third." The CCC team strengthened in the off-season by signing Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott), Jan Hilt (Astana), and Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha). The team had negotiated a deal with Rohan Dennis, but the Australian is now expected to sign with another team.
