Can Team Ineos win three Grand Tours in 2020?

Will Team Ineos be able to win the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a España in 2020? The riders seem ready to try, but their rivals are pushing back as the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) continues to debate the introduction of salary and budget caps.

Team Ineos (formerly Team Sky) has won the Tour de France seven of the last eight times, and Chris Froome has won the Vuelta a España twice and the Giro d'Italia once. In this year's Tour de France, the British team took first and second place with Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas, despite early offensive efforts by Julien Alaphilippe and Thibaut Pinot.

The team often struggled and stumbled in the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, but they acquired 2019 Giro d'Italia winner Richard Carapas from Movistar and signed time trial world champion Rohan Dennis to further prepare for the stage race. The team is looking to add to its roster of riders. Pavel Sivakov, Tao Geoghegan Hart, and Ivan Sosa are all considered future stage racing talents, and Team Ineos' 2020 budget reportedly exceeds €40 million.

Winning the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a España in the same season is possible and could be a goal for Team Ineos in 2020.

"Why not dream big? If anyone can do it, we can do it," Italian Team Ineos rider Filippo Ganna recently told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Karapas is targeting the 2020 Giro d'Italia and is eager to take on the challenge with Team Ineos.

"Who knows? But I think I can try," he told Cycling News in response to a question. Team Ineos' domination of the Tour de France in recent years has not been good for anyone.

Jonathan Vaughters, manager of EF Education First, has been studying salary caps and budget regulations as part of his business MBA and wants to compete on a level playing field.

"You are buying certainty. You are buying the ability to win," he told Reuters last year. 'You're looking at an almost impenetrable wall of money. You can basically buy all the best riders. The question for the sport is, if they all belong to one team, is it fun for the spectators to watch?"

He added, "I think it's a good idea to have a team of riders who are all on the same team.

UCI President David Lapartient also seems enthusiastic about the advantages of Team Ineos.

"I am against a salary cap for athletes. Cyclists can make as much money as they want and teams need to pay their riders as much as they want. What I am saying is that there should be a cap on the overall team budget. This means that if you pay certain riders higher salaries, less money can go to other riders. In other words, we will be able to distribute strong riders to each team," LaPartiento explained this summer.

However, the UCI president also called the arrival of new sponsors like Ineos "healthy" for the sport, noting that "one of our goals is to have a stronger economy."

Team Ineos acquired Carapaz from Movistar, strengthening their roster and weakening the roster of their Spanish rivals. Max Chandri led Carapaz to victory at the Giro d'Italia and believes he can help Team Ineos win three Grand Tours in 2020.

"Calapaz can aim for the Giro and then the Vuelta, while Froome and Bernal can aim for the Tour.

"Carapas has a shot at the Giro and the Vuelta, while Froome and Bernal have a shot at the Tour," Sciandri told Cycling News after the Giro d'Italia route was announced in Milan.

"I don't think it's right. There should be a limit to everything for everyone. Their success is good for Dave Brailsford and the team, but the sport lacks balance. How can any other small pro-conti team compete when Team Ineos' vehicle budget is larger than their annual budget?
