Pinarello has released a custom-painted, limited edition version of its Dogma F12 X-Light for Chris Froome, who will return to racing this weekend at the Saitama Criterium in Japan.
Just 14 weeks after Froome suffered a major crash at the Criterium du Dauphiné and was forced to spend time in the intensive care unit, the Kenyan-born British rider will once again carry the number.
The head tube of the Dogma F12 X-Light bears Frum's trademark rhino. This is both a tribute to his Kenyan roots and support for Unite for Wildlife, a charity that tackles illegal wildlife trade. Froomey, Froome's nickname, is also a rhino companion and subtly represents Froome's many Grand Tour victories: four yellows represent Froome's four Tour de France victories, two reds represent his Vuelta success, and a Y represents the Giro d'Italia Y represents the pink of the Giro d'Italia.
This special edition Dogma F12 is an X-Light version and is substantially lighter, using Torayca T1100G Unidirectional carbon fiber instead of the T1000 1K used in the regular F12. Pinarello has also improved the use of resin and used different frame molds with more emphasis on quality control. As a result, the frame weight of 720g was reduced by 60g. [Pinarello uses disc brakes on the F12 X-Light, while the Flume bikes use rim brakes.
Pricing and availability of these special edition bikes have yet to be determined, and Pinarello says they will be available in 11 different sizes, but we would be surprised to see these bikes in your local bike store. However, Pinarello's product overview does show the Dogma F12 X-Light along with other products.
Given that the standard F12 X-Light frameset is priced at £6,000, this one is going to require deep pockets.
