Tour of California suspended until 2020

The Tour of California has been abandoned until 2020. The race had been the UCI's premier race in North America since its inception in 2006. [Christine Klein, president of the Amgen Tour of California and executive vice president of AEG Sports, said, "This was a very difficult decision, but since we launched the race 14 years ago, the The fundamentals of our business have changed," she said. [While pro cycling continues to grow globally and we are very proud of the work we have done to increase the relevance of pro cycling, especially in the U.S., it is getting more difficult every year to organize a race. This new reality has forced us to re-evaluate our options and we are actively evaluating all aspects of the event to determine if there is a business model that will allow us to successfully resume racing in 2021."

The Tour of California was originally held in February, but moved to May four years later. Although the timing of the event overlapped with the Giro d'Italia, it was attended by such powerhouses as Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Egan Bernal, and Peter Sagan.

Since 2009, despite the involvement of Tour de France organizer Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the Tour of California appeared to be suffering from economic strain in the pro cycling community.

"I want to sincerely thank the teams, cyclists, sponsors, volunteers, elected officials, host cities, and all the fans for making the Amgen Tour of California 'the greatest race in America,'" Klein said.

"Most of all, I want to recognize the hard work and dedication of the teams that have worked tirelessly with me year after year to develop this renowned event. I would also like to thank our governing bodies, USA Cycling, UCI and the Amaury Sport Organisation, for their continued support."

Bob Stapleton, president of USA Cycling and who once ran a team in the race, praised the efforts of the Tour of California organizers and offered his support.

"On behalf of USA Cycling, I want to thank AEG, Christine, and her team for providing a great showcase for American sports and American athletes. We stand ready to help mobilize further support and resources so that we can resume this event in 2021."[14
