Hernando Bohorquez has signed a one-year contract extension with the Kazakhstan team and will remain with the Astana Pro Team for 2020. Colombian Bohorquez came to Astana from Manzana Postobon ahead of the 2019 campaign, but had his season ruined by injuries sustained in two separate crashes.
Bohorquez crashed on stage 5 of the Tour Colombia 2.1 in February, injuring his back. He finished the race but did not return to competition until June, when a fall at the Fulmi GP in early September ended the 27-year-old's season prematurely with a facial injury.
"I want to thank the team for giving me a new chance. It means a lot to me after a difficult year of falls and health issues," he said in a statement released by Astana. The Astana ProTeam is like a family and I love it. I am ready and motivated for next season."
Bohorquez, who hails from Umbita, Boyaca, placed seventh in the under-23 road race at the 2014 World Championships in Ponferrada and was part of the Manzana Postobon team that participated in the 2018 Vuelta a EspaƱa, arriving in Madrid in 93rd place overall.
A strong climber, he signed with Astana as domestique for compatriot Miguel Angel Lopez. Bohorquez helped Lopez win the Tour Colombia 2.1 in February, but did not ride with him in the Giro d'Italia or Vuelta.
"Unfortunately, Hernando had an unlucky year. He suffered a bad crash and a back injury that forced him to miss more than two months of racing, and he ended the season with another crash. But at the same time, he helped Miguel Angel Lopez at the Tour of Colombia and impressed me with his team spirit," said Astana General Manager Alexandre Vinokurov.
"We hope Hernando recovers in the best possible way, physically and mentally, and we want to give him another chance next season. We believe he can surprise us."
