Filippo Ganna broke the world record for individual pursuit twice in one day at the Track World Cup in Minsk. On Sunday morning, he clocked 4:04.252 in the preliminaries, breaking the record set by Ashton Lambie (USA) in September.

Ganna caught his opponent, John Archibald (GBR), just over three kilometers into the final, and continued to break his own record by more than a second at an incredible pace. 4000m average speed is 59.345 km/h.

Lambie's previous best of 4:05.423 was set in Bolivia's Pan American Championships in Cochabamba, which was recorded at an altitude of over 2,500 meters. Ganna became the first athlete to break the world record at sea level since Jack Bobridge broke Chris Boardman's 16-year-old record with 4:10.534 in Sydney in 2011.

Ganna already held the world's best time at sea level since qualifying for this year's Track World Championships in Plushkow in 4:07.456, the first time since Andrea Collinelli first broke 4:20 at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Ganna set a record-breaking average speed of 58.956 km/h in the Sunday morning qualifier in Minsk and beat Archibald in the Sunday afternoon final. Archibald, a Briton, clocked 4:09.843 to advance to the final.

Lambie, the previous world record holder, won the bronze medal in Minsk on Sunday, beating Stefan Bissegger (Switzerland) in 4:11.215.

On Saturday, Ganna led the Italian Team Pursuit foursome to a third-place finish in a competition won by France. Individual Pursuit is no longer an Olympic event after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ganna enjoyed a solid road campaign in his first year with Team Ineos; the 23-year-old won a bronze medal in the time trial at the World Championships in Yorkshire and will be back in 2019 with an Italian time trial title and Tour La Provence and BinckBank Tour stage wins, claiming three victories against the clock.
