Wout Van Aert won the prestigious "Flandrian of the Year" award by a one-point margin over Remco Evenpole, as voted by team directors, managers, and race organizers. The Jumbo-Visma rider finished on the podium in Strade Bianche and E3 Harelbeke, and took two stages and the green jersey in the Criterium du Dauphiné.
Van Aert then took the Belgian time trial title and the white jersey for best young rider and the points jersey at the Tour de France. However, he crashed in the Pau time trial and suffered a serious leg injury.
"I am very happy with this award. I was lucky to join a world-class team. It makes me a better rider," said Van Aert, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. It is a great honor for me to finish in front of Lemko Evenpole, even though I am only 19 years old. Lemko is a great championship contender. In Classica (San Sebastian, where Evenepoel won) I was underwhelmed."
Van Aert is back in training after months of injury rehabilitation. 'My goal is to race cross this winter. Probably not at the top level, but it will be good preparation for the spring."
Also on the team are Victor Kampenaerts (Lotto-Soudal), who set an hour record this year; teammate Thomas De Gendt, a stage winner at the Tour de France; and Paris-Roubaix winner Philippe Gilbert (De Tuning-Quick-Step), Baloise-Bergietour, European time trial title, Clasica San Sebastian, and Evenpole, winner of the silver medal at the Elite Time Trial World Championships, were also nominated.
Other nominees included Sophie de Vuyst, winner of the Brabantspijl women's race, for best female cyclist; De Gendt, the Tour's lone stage winner, for "Spark of the Year"; Campenaerts for best non-road rider; Julie de Wilde, Ilan van Wilder, and Dries Verstappen won the Future Flandrian Award, Dries Devenyns won the Best Teammate Award, and Julien Alaphilippe won the International Flandrian Award.
