Lorena Wiebes, ranked No. 1 in the women's world rankings, has refuted rumors that she is about to break the final year of her contract with Parkhotel Valkenburg in order to move teams for 2020.
The Dutch-speaking website Wielerverhaal.com published an article claiming that Wiebes' management team is trying to negotiate a deal with the 20-year-old Dutch rider's Dutch team to terminate her contract a year early. Trek-Segafredo, CCC-Liv, and Sunweb have expressed interest.
In a statement released on Twitter on Tuesday, Wiebes neither confirmed nor denied the rumor, but said, "I would like to correct one thing."
"I will always be grateful to my teammates [and staff] and they always pulled out all the stops to make sure I did as well as possible in the race," she wrote. [Parkhotel Valkenburg is a training team and I couldn't have expected anything more from them either.
"It is very unfortunate that it came to this between me and Parkhotel Valkenburg," Wiebes also wrote, suggesting that negotiations are still ongoing, with the team wanting to keep the star rider, who signed a three-year contract before the 2018 season.
"I'm looking forward to next season," Wiebes added, "but I still don't know where that will be." After a successful 2019, the pressure on teammates will only get higher and the focus on developing young talent will be lost in the pressure to produce results."
