Annemieke van Fruten donates €10,000 to local cycling club from signed cycling apparel.

Road racing world champion Annemiek van Fruten (Mitchelton-Scott) raised €10,000 by selling unwanted cycling clothing for junior members of the local Dutch cycling club WV Ede.

The Dutch rider was available for photos and signed autographs and clothing at the Peerenboom bicycle store in Wageningen, just west of the Dutch city of Arnhem, on Saturday. The money raised for the cycling club in the neighboring town of Eide will go toward the purchase of mountain bikes that the youngsters can borrow from the club.

"Aside from the money raised, I really enjoyed meeting the people who came last Saturday," van Vleuten wrote on his website.

"Everyone patiently waited in line and thanks to the help of the bike shop I was able to talk freely with everyone and take pictures.

"It was a very enjoyable afternoon with so many different people coming. Thank you to everyone who came and donated so generously," she wrote.

"Organizing the 'attic sale' was a great success and the proceeds definitely exceeded my expectations: from my old cycling clothes and kit, I made almost 10,000 euros [£8,600/$11,100].

Van Vleuten, who won the 2019 World Championships road race in September with a solo 100 km ride, said the club's focus on young riders is on fun rather than performance.

"That's something I'm very supportive of," she said. Many kids are waiting for a "mountain bike loaner," and WV Ede will soon be working with Pellenboom Bicycle Shop to purchase a new mountain bike.

Van Vleuten added that more merchandise will be sold on the club's website beginning November 7, with proceeds continuing to benefit the club's young riders.
