Modolo reportedly close to signing with Corendon Circus

Italian sprinter Sacha Modolo will reportedly join Mathieu Van Der Pol's Corendon Circus for 2020 The 32-year-old Modolo, who has spent most of the past two seasons battling intestinal weakness, is currently looking for a team.

According to a report in Wielerflits, Modolo has already agreed to a contract with the Pro Continental Belgian team, but the move has not yet been announced. Modolo has raced for EF Education First for the past two years, last winning the 2018 Vuelta a Andalucía.

Modolo's relationship with Corendon was reported last month by La Gazzetta dello Sport, and the Israel Cycling Academy, which will move up to the World Tour level next season, was said to be interested in signing him.

Before joining EF, Modolo spent four seasons with Bardiani-CSF, where he turned pro in 2010, before spending four years with Lampre/UAE Team Emirates. during his 10-year career, Modolo has won stages at the Tour de Suisse and Beijing, 2015 46 victories, including two wins at the Giro d'Italia.

In the last two seasons, he suffered from intestinal fungus and even struggled to climb stairs. Three rounds of antifungal medication and a switch to a special diet brought him back to normal, but not in time to retain his EF.

"I seem to have been forgotten by everyone," Modolo told Cycling News in September. After the Tour of Flanders, it was confirmed that he was gluten intolerant, he changed his diet, started the Giro d'Italia, and soon found himself on his hands and knees."

"That's when I visited Dr. Juliano Poser, who works with (soccer player) Lionel Messi. His diagnosis confirmed that I had five different types of fungi in my intestines. He told me that I had been infested with fungi for at least three years.

"He was prescribed three different antibiotics for 16 days. A special diet would also be required for several months. Dr. Poser says it will take 6 months to fully recover. He is already feeling better, but lacks solid form and base."

Modolo went on to say that he would accept a one-year contract to prove himself, and it appears that that contract may indeed be signed.

Wielerflits, in the same report, states that Floris De Tier (Jumbo-Visma), Petr Vakoč (Deceuninck-QuickStep), and Louis Vervaeke (TeamSunweb) are also headed to Corendon But like Modolo, all three have unconfirmed contracts. However, like Modolo, all three are currently out of contract.

Corendon Circus has already announced 2020 contracts for junior cyclocross world champion Ben Tourette and fellow junior Ryan Cortens, while Frenchman Antoine Benoit will turn pro with the team next year. Meanwhile, veteran cobbled classic specialist Stein Devolder is leaving the team to retire.
