Australian sprinter Caleb Yuan admitted that despite winning three stages in his first Tour de France in July, he found it difficult to cope with the stress and that finishing the race was "the biggest relief of my life."
After four years with Australian WorldTour team Mitchelton-Scott, Ewan decided to move to Belgian WorldTour team Lotto Soudal for the 2019 season.
After years of not being selected as a Tour de France rider with Mitchelton-Scott, Lotto Soudal was giving Ewan his first chance to try his hand, but he said the expectations that come with having a team built around him in the world's biggest cycling race were not insignificant Ewan said.
"I had to take the risk of moving on (from Mitchelton-Scott) because I wasn't getting what I needed from the team in terms of performance," Ewan told theage.com.au over the weekend.
"I went into the Tour with a new team and as the clear leader of the team, I went there to get results. "For the past eight years, Andre has won 12 (11) stages of the Tour de France."
"It's my first Tour and the media is watching me."
"Will he do as well as I thought he would the year before, or will he end up doing nothing, or was Mitchelton right to leave him at home?"
"It's my first Tour and the media is looking at me.
"I went into the Tour with a lot of pressure from different angles," Ewan said. His wife gave birth prematurely to the couple's first child, and their daughter was still in the hospital when he had to leave for the race.
However, Ewan's wife and daughter later joined him in the race and watched him win three stages: stage 11, stage 16, and the final stage on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. A great accomplishment for any rider, but even more so for Ewan's race debut. [especially in the first half of the race, which he didn't win and obviously needed to win.
"I went to the Tour, did well, did well with my new team, and had a daughter. I think there was a lot of stress leading up to the Tour. [In the end, I managed to win three stages in the last ten days. The pressure from the start and from not winning the first half of the race.
"In fact, I'm dealing with a lot on my own. I always do. I don't know if that's a good thing. Maybe I should talk to someone, I don't know, but I think when I finished the tool I had the biggest relief of my life."
