Vincenzo Nibali will target the Giro d'Italia, the Tokyo Olympics, and the road world championships in Switzerland in his first season with Trek-Segafredo, his new team manager Luca Guercilena has confirmed.
Nibali, who turns 35 on Thursday and will race his last race under Bahrain-Merida colors at the Shanghai Tour de France criterium in China this weekend, is turning a major page in his career and starting a new chapter with Trek-Segafredo.
He has already visited Trek headquarters in Wisconsin and met many of his new teammates on the men's and women's teams.
He will wear Trek-Segafredo's 2020 colors of red and white on January 1 and will make his racing debut in Europe in February.
Guercilena confirmed that Richie Porte will start the 2020 season for the Tour Down Under and that the Australian will likely lead Trek-Segafredo again in the Tour de France. Bauke Mollema's goals have yet to be confirmed, but it appears that he will compete in either the Giro d'Italia or the Tour de France.
"Vincenzo was enthusiastic and ready to start a new adventure in the spirit of youth," Guercilena told La Gazzetta dello Sport of Nibali's presence in Wisconsin.
"He has the chance to start a new chapter in his career with a new setup. That would always motivate me. All of us must live up to expectations to make it work as well as possible."
Guercilena confirmed that Nibali will reach two peaks of form in 2020. The Giro d'Italia and the Olympic road race are his major goals, and the Tour de France is impossible to target.
"Vincenzo's main targets are the Giro d'Italia, the Tokyo Olympics, and the World Championships in Switzerland," Guercilena stated.
"In modern cycling it is impossible to have three peaks of great form in the same year. It is important to strike a careful balance and to have two peaks."
Trek-Segafredo is using world champions Mads Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven, Toms Skřiņš, and Edward Theuns for the Classic and One-Day races. Others joining the team were Emīls Liepiņš, Alexander Kamp, and Charlie Quarterman from England.
Nibali recently returned from a vacation in the Maldives and will begin training for 2020 after a trip to Shanghai and a personally sponsored trip to South Africa.
Trek-Segafredo will hold training camps in Ragusa, Sicily in December and Mallorca in January. Nibali, however, will enjoy a training camp in the highlands in late January.
"We haven't decided yet when he will make his debut, but we are thinking of starting in Europe in late February. Vincenzo will test at the Apeldoorn circuit in early December and could repeat that in Mallorca in January."
Nibali joins Trek Segafredo with his trusted coach Paolo Slongo, soigneur Michele Parini, doctor Emilio Magni, and brother Antonio. Guercilena has already formed a group of athletes around Nibali who follow a similar race program. They include Giulio Ciccone, Gianluca Brambilla, Nicola Consi, and Antonio Nibali. Newcomer Kenny Elissonde could also compete in the Giro d'Italia.
"Vincenzo is quiet and reserved. But he knows what he wants and speaks his mind. His charisma is evident in the decisions he makes and the ideas he wants to develop," Guercilena said.
"Vincenzo is a leader and he joined the team to get results. The young players on the team have to learn from him how he focuses on details and how he focuses on goals. But that is not his priority. He is here to get results and show that he is a leader. We are going to help him do that."
