Cavendish overcomes previous night's crash to win Darnley at Ghent Six

Mark Cavendish recovered from his crash in the opening round of the 2019 Ghent Six to win the second round in Delny on Wednesday night.

The British rider was forced to miss the first round of the Madison after crashing in a one-lap time trial on Tuesday night and his rear wheel appeared to have slipped out from under him.

But before the race started Wednesday night, Cavendish told Belgian sports website Sporza.be that his crash was due to trying a new bike position.

"I'm a little banged up from the after-effects of yesterday, but I feel good.

"It's complicated, but basically my position has changed. My weight was more forward, and I actually didn't do a flying lap test run, but my weight was too far forward and I couldn't turn the car," he explained. [When I went around the banking, I thought I was done. I was still above the red line and I knew I was going to crash. It's a really tight track and you have to control the bike. I knew I was going to crash, so I prepared for it. I knew I was going to crash, so I was prepared for that, but it's definitely not ideal."

Asked if he was disappointed that he and partner Owain Doull, who finished second overall in last month's six-day race in London, did not have a strong showing, Cavendish was confident he could overcome the crash.

"There are still five days to go. Ghent is the hardest six days. It's the Tour de France of track cycling. I always want to show, but it's not easy to show. You have to be in your best form and everything has to go right for you to be able to fight for the win."

Indeed, Gent's partner, Iljo Caisse, won the Super Sprint on Wednesday night, followed by Cavendish winning the Dagny. Keisse and Cavendish won the Ghent Six in 2014 when they competed as a pair, and are currently in sixth place overall (out of 14 teams) with 58 points.
