Astana team leader Jacob Fuglsang, who is hoping to win the overall at the 2020 Giro d'Italia and possibly compete in the Tour de France for teammate Miguel Angel Lopez in order to be in the best possible shape for the Tokyo Olympics He said.
The 34-year-old had arguably his best season ever in 2019. He won Liège-Bastogne-Liège, took his second overall win at the Criterium du Dauphiné, won a stage at the Vuelta a España, and went into July's Tour de France as one of the favorites to win the race, but crashed out.
"I haven't done very well in the Tour in the last few years, but I want to go for the overall again in the Tour," he said. But I think it would be a good idea to try something new and see what I can do in the Giro."
With the Ardennes Classics back on target in the spring, Fuglsang also wants to see if he can turn his silver medal behind Belgium's Greg Van Avermaet in the 2016 Rio Olympic road race into a gold medal on Tokyo's hilly road race course We want to find out.
Still, Fuglsang hopes to be part of Astana's Tour de France national team, but will be supporting Lopez, as he did in the 2019 Vuelta a España, where Lopez finished fifth overall and Fuglsang took his first Grand Tour stage win Possibly.
"As it stands, it looks like he will be in the Tour to help Lopez, but he is not really 100% sure, in that the Giro route seems to suit him, whereas the Tour route seems to suit Lopez.
"But it will be difficult to go for the overall at the Tour and be fresh enough for the Olympic road race," Fuglsang said. Fuglsang also supported then-Astana teammate Fabio Aru at the 2016 Tour, where he finished second in Brazil's Olympic road race.
"It's a bit of a case of trying to replicate what happened last time because it went pretty well.
