Steve Cummings is retiring at the age of 38. According to journalist Ned Boulting (opens in new tab), the English rider is retiring. He was not named to NTT's 2020 roster when the team announced its completed lineup last week.
Cummings transitioned from track, where he won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2004 Athens Olympics, to road pro with Landbouwkrediet-Colnago in 2005. 2007 saw him join the Discovery Channel team on the World Tour (then the Pro Tour), he continued to mix the two disciplines until 2007, when he joined the Discovery Channel team.
Cummings did not join a team in 2008, as it merged with the Astana team, but instead joined Pro Continental's Barloworld, where he took his first professional wins in the Giro della Reggio Calabria and Coppa Bernocchi.
After the South African team folded in 2010, Cummings moved to the upstart Team Sky with teammates Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome, where he spent two seasons before moving to the BMC Racing team.
In addition to winning his first Grand Tour stage at the 2012 Vuelta a España, Cummings also won stages at the Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour of Beijing, Tour de Pollogne, Tour of Britain, and Tour Mediterraneen.
He moved to MTN-Kubeka in 2015 and took his first Tour de France stage win in Mende, a major result for the South African team on Nelson Mandela Day, outpacing Romain Bardet and Thibaut Pinot in the steep uphill finale.
The year after the team was renamed Dimension Data, Cummings won his second Tour de France stage victory by breaking away from the breakaway group on stage 7, Lac de Pajolais In 2016, he won the Criterium du Dauphiné, Tirreno -. Adriatico, and Vuelta al País Vasco, where he also won a stage.
He was almost selected for the Rio Olympics, but was a late addition to the British team when Pete Kennaugh was eliminated. He returned from Rio to win the Tour of Britain overall; in 2017 Cummings won both the road race and time trial British championship titles.
However, his final season was plagued by injuries. He broke his collarbone in a crash at Pais Vasco and ended the season with a fractured vertebrae at the Tour of Britain
