Vuelta a Aragon 2020 cancelled

After returning to the UCI calendar in 2018 after 13 years, the Vuelta a Aragon will disappear again in 2020 after failing to secure sufficient funding for the UCI 2.1 ranked stage race.

According to a press release from the regional federation Aragonesa FederaciĆ³n, the race will once again go on hiatus due to "insufficient support to guarantee its continued existence."

This news comes ahead of the announcement of the route for the 2020 Vuelta a EspaƱa on December 17.

The Vuelta a Aragon, held in May 2018 and 2019, was won this year by Eduardo Prades (Movistar) and Javier Moreno (Declo Marseille) after Movistar's Jaime Rosson was disqualified for a biological passport anomaly.

Race organizers had hoped that the event would be part of the UCI's new Pro Series, which will encompass most of the major first class and horse category races in 2020.

"Unfortunately, this hiatus came at a time when the reorganization of the UCI calendar was arousing interest among teams in the highest categories.
