Wanty Gobert Tolmans announced Friday that it has signed two neo-pros, Jasper De Plus and Alexander Evans, to two-year contracts through 2021. Team director Hilaire Van der Schueren said the team is committed to investing in young talent.
De Plus, 22, is the younger brother of Lawrence De Plus (Jumbo Visma) and joins the team from Home Solution Sonens. He is also known as a time triallist and recently won the under 23 Chrono de Nations and was second in the under 23 time trial at the Belgian Championships.
"He ended his last season in the U23 category with a great victory in the Chrono des Nations. [I hope that the team will guide me to take the first steps towards the pro peloton. I want to learn as much as I can and seize every opportunity given to me."
Evans, 22, was previously a member of the SEG Racing Academy. He has shown his talent in the mountains with a stage win at the Tour de l'Avenir on the summit of Mount Méribel. He also finished second in La Planche des Belles Filles at the Tour de Alsace.
"I am thrilled and proud to be selected as a Wanty-Gaubert-Tormans rider. As a first year pro I am eager to learn from the more experienced riders on the team." Racing in Europe is more aggressive and more challenging with positioning, smaller roads, and descents.
"How great to prove what I can do on my favorite terrain in the most important U23 race in the world. I'm looking forward to my first year in Wanty-Gobert-Tormans and I want to be as competitive as possible.
Team director Van der Schullen said that Wanty Gobert is pleased to welcome two up-and-coming talents covering the time trial and climbing disciplines.
"We are happy to give one of the most talented Belgian baldur a chance in the pro peloton," Van der Schullen said of Jasper De Plus. His victory in the U23 Chrono de Nations convinced us that his time trial ability will add value to our team. The positioning game will be his most difficult challenge. We hope that with our support he will become as good as his brother."
"Alexander Evans won one of the most difficult stages of the Tour de Lavenir. We continue to invest in our young riders and we expect him to do well. We look forward to seeing this talented climber gain experience."
