After a successful bid by CGLL Promotions and the Veneto Region, Filippo Pozzato will play a key role as organizer of the 2020 elite men's Italian national championships.
In recent years, the Italian federation has been splitting up the various categories of road racing national championships and has struggled to find the manpower to organize several events, including the elite men's time trial championship.
However, road racing remains a prestigious event where Italian riders fight to wear the iconic tricolore champion jersey for a year. Davide Formolo is the current Italian national champion.
According to Italian press reports, the 2020 elite men's road race championship will take place on June 21, starting in Bassano del Grappa and finishing in Cittadella after 12 laps of the testing Marostica Circuit and Rosina climb. The total race distance will be over 250 km.
Pozzato retired after the 2018 season, but is involved in the project through his former manager and business partner; according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pozzato helped design the course to be held near his hometown of Sandrigo, north of Vicenza La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Pozzato helped design a course to be held near his hometown of Sandrigo, north of Vicenza.
La Gazzetta dello Sport described the decision as the first victory of Pozzato's post-race career; the 2006 Milano-Sanremo winner defeated Damiano Cunego and Luca Paolini in a sprint finish in Imola in 2009 to win the Italian national title.
"This is a victory for the Region of Veneto, the President of Zaia, and everyone involved in this project, including Gaetano Lunardon of the restaurant Rosina on the climb of the circuit," Pozzato said.
"This idea started two years ago and we have done a lot. The Province of Veneto is deeply involved in this project and is committed to organizing a special race, not a typical race."
