Egan Bernal Aims for Giro and Tour Double in 2020

Egan Bernal (opens in new tab) again said he wants to ride both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France (opens in new tab) in 2020, brushing aside talk of pressure after winning the 2019 Tour de France and rivalry within Team Ineos (opens in new tab) [opens in new tab] [opens in new tab] [opens in new tab (opens in new tab)

Bernal has talked about his 2020 goals several times in interviews over the past few months, but he always chooses his words carefully. As he begins training for the new season, he seems more convinced than ever in an interview with the Spanish newspaper AS after winning the AS America del Deporte award that he will target the 2020 Giro d'Italia before competing in the Tour de France.

Team Ineos will again be looking to win the Tour de France, but with Bernal, Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome, and newcomer Richard Kalapas on the 2020 roster, a strong team and a huge budget, the British team has the potential to win all three in 2020 The British team could be aiming to win all three Grand Tours in 2020.

Froome has already stated that he will aim for his fifth Tour de France next July once he fully recovers from multiple fractures suffered in a warm-up crash at the Criterium du Dauphiné in June. Calapaz is expected to try to defend his 2019 Giro d'Italia victory, and Thomas could also compete in the Italian Grand Tour. Bernal is a team rider, but he has the personal ambition and hope of becoming the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in the same season, which could disrupt Team Ineos' logical plans. Bernal never raced the Giro d'Italia while with Androni Giocattoli, and he would like to return to the place he first made his home when he first moved to Europe.

"What I want to do is to ride the Giro and to be in the Tour. It's a very beautiful race, I lived in Italy for two years and I have a lot of friends there. I've already ridden the Tour, so I could try the Tour in Italy," Bernal said in an interview for the "America del Deporte" award, according to "As".

"It's very complicated to do both, but you can do it if you decide. The Giro, the Tour, the Vuelta, they are all important races.

Team Ineos will soon have its first winter training camp in Majorca, where they will discuss and prepare for their big 2020 goals. Bernal suggested that team management is always listening to requests from the riders and may allow them to target the 2020 Giro and Tour.

"It's easy to pick a target because the team takes the rider's opinion into account. They will never take you to a race you don't want to go to," Bernal suggested.

"On the other hand, you have to take into account the opinions of the other riders. We have Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome, and now Richard Kalapas. So we all have to agree and come up with an ideal plan that fits our careers and our roles. I'm very comfortable talking to Chris and Geraint Thomas, so I don't have any problems at the moment."

Bernal will turn 23 on January 13, but looks wiser than his age; he moved to Europe at 18 to turn pro with Androni Giocattoli, where he quickly showed his talent and personality before moving to Team Sky in 2018. After winning the Oro y Paz in Colombia and the Tour of California, he finished 15th in his Tour de France debut and was a supporting role for Thomas and Froome.

In 2019, he became the first Colombian in history to win the Tour de France, but was unaffected by the pressure and expectations on his young shoulders.

"I've tried not to feel pressure," he explained cautiously.

"You can look at it two ways: one, I'm still young and how many more Tour de France's can I win? I am the first Colombian to win the Tour and I feel I am good at it. Of course I will win the next Tour, the Giro, and the Vuelta, but whatever happens, I have already won the Tour and no one can take that away from me. I'm not relaxed, but I don't feel any pressure because I think I've already done some good things."
