Amador deal not settled between Team Ineos and Movistar

Andrei Amador's contract situation remains unresolved as he enters the final days of 2019. The 33-year-old Costa Rican native intends to break his two-year contract with Movistar in order to join Team Ineos in 2020.

The Spanish news media Diario de Navarra reported that a final decision by the UCI must be made by the end of December.

Movistar announced at the end of the Tour de France in July that it had extended its contract with Amador, which runs through the end of 2021.

However, the Spanish news media Marca reported in September that Amador cancelled his two-year contract with Movistar and instead followed Giro d'Italia winner Richard Carapas to Team Ineos.

Amador had raced under Movistar sponsorship for nine seasons (2011-19) and had previously signed with Caisse d'Epargne for two more seasons. He was also part of Movistar's development team in 2006.

Amador finished in the top 10 overall at the Giro d'Italia in 2015 and 2016 and won a stage in 2012.

This year, he was part of the support team that helped his teammate Carapas win the Giro d'Italia. He also helped Mikel Landa, Nairo Quintana, and Alejandro Valverde finish in the overall top 10 at the Tour de France.

Amador's contract was handled by Italian agent Giuseppe Acquadro, whose relationship with Movistar boss Eusebio Unzué is reportedly strained.

Acquadro is also the agent for Calapaz, who will move to Team Ineos next year, and Quintana, who will move to Arkea Samsic in 2020.

It is reported that Acquadro told Movistar that Calapaz would sign with Team Ineos during the Giro d'Italia, which may have caused a rift between the agent and team manager.

Acquadro told Marca that he hopes the situation will be resolved soon: "I want to keep a good relationship with Unzier, who has done a great job over the years. I don't like controversy."

He added: "I don't like controversy.

Two other clients of Acquadro broke their contracts with their current teams to move to Ineos: in 2017, Egan Bernal did so amicably with Androni Giocattoli Sidermec, and Ivan Sosa left the team last summer after a contract dispute with Trek Segafredo Ivan Sosa left the team last summer after a contract dispute with Trek Segafredo.

Marca reported that Movistar is close to completing its 2020 roster, renewing the contract of Carlos Betancur and rejoining Alejandro Valverde, Luis Mas, Jorge Arcas, Nelson Oliveira, Jose Joaquin Rojas, and Antonio Pedro. They plan to rejoin the group.
