Tom Dumoulin put on his number for the first time in almost six months on Sunday, competing in a mountain bike race on the beach in Scheveningen, the Netherlands. The Dutch rider finished sixth in the race, which was won by Continental rider Rick van Breda.
Dumoulin last raced at the Criterium du Dauphiné in June, but was forced to abandon the race to undergo surgery on a knee injury sustained the previous month at the Giro d'Italia. Dumoulin, who tore a tendon in a crash at the Giro, missed the Tour de France and the rest of the season.
In August, it was announced that Dumoulin would leave Sunweb at the end of the 2019 season to join Jumbo-Visma. He will officially become a Jumbo-Visma rider on January 1, which means he will be wearing Sunweb kit and riding a Sunweb-branded Giant bike at the MTB Beach Race Scheveningen on Sunday.Ahead of the 2019 season, Cervélo is a Giant replaced Sunweb as Sunweb's bike supplier.
Dumoulin will be officially unveiled as a Jumbo Visma rider at a team presentation in Amsterdam on December 20. The 29-year-old will join Vuelta a España winner Primos Roglic and Tour de France podium finisher Steven Kruijswijk on the roster of stage racing talents.
In October, Dumoulin indicated that he would skip the Giro d'Italia next season, which he won in 2017, to focus on the Tour de France and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
"It's not the most ideal scenario," Dumoulin told NOS, but he is "confident that I can combine the Tour and the Olympics."
