Victor Kampenaerts has his sights set on all three individual time trial events at next year's Giro d'Italia.
In a Facebook live event with Belgian website Sporza.be this week, Campenaerts said he wants to "win all three" in the Giro test and hopes to qualify for the second of Belgium's two time trial spots in the Tokyo Olympics He said.
"My next goal is the Tour of Italy. The three time trials in the Giro are reserved for me and I want to win all three," Campenaerts said. I have a free pass from a new team, so I just want to focus on that."
Kampenaerts has spent the past two seasons with Lotto Soudal, winning his second European and national championship time trial titles in 2018, and in 2019 he will be looking to set a new hour record of 55.089 km to surpass Bradley Wiggins' 54.526 km, set by the British rider in 2015. He surpassed the hour record of 526 km.
"Taking the Hour Record was a great start to the year," said the 28-year-old Belgian. He also won the Tirreno-Adriatico time trial." He also won the time trial at Tirreno-Adriatico. My preparation for the World Championships in Yorkshire, England, was going well, but unfortunately I crashed in the time trial. It's been a lot of mountains and valleys, but that's part of a sporting career."
"I would have liked to have stayed with Lotto Soudal, but this team doesn't have just one time trialist. Next year they will have a strong new competitor in Philippe Gilbert as their main man, so my priority will be lower. But I've found a very good new team now, and I have no hard feelings."
Campenaerts said he is aware that his chances for Olympic selection will depend largely on his performance in the first half of the season. The Belgian selection committee announced in May that it would name the second TT rider, and the lucky riders are Wout Van Aert and Laurens De Plus (both Jumbo-Visma), Yves Lampert (Deceuninck-Quick Step), and Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Campenaerts, are likely to be chosen from among the following.
The 2020 Giro will begin with an 8.6 km prologue time trial in Budapest, Hungary on May 9 and end with a 16.5 km individual time trial in Milan on May 31. In between, stage 14, a 33.7 km stage, will take place on May 23.
"If the Giro goes as planned, we definitely have a chance, but Wout Van Aert will be our biggest rival," Campenaerts said.
While the time trial at the Giro is his next goal, Campenaerts is looking forward to Olympic selection and another shot at the world TT title in Switzerland.
"What I'm looking forward to in 2020 is the Olympics or a world title, or both," he said. At the end of my career, I would like to have either the Olympics or the world title."
