Plaque Commemorating Lambrecht's Tour de Fjord Stage Win Unveiled in Norway

A star-shaped plaque commemorating the life of Björg Lambrecht of Lotto Sørdal, who died after a crash at the Tour de Pollogne this past August, was unveiled in the Norwegian town of Egern, where Lambrecht scored his only career professional victory in 2018.

As reported by Het Nieuwsblad, Norwegian professional riders Alexander Kristof and Sven-Erik Byström, both with UAE Team Emirates, and Susanne Andersen of Sunweb were present and helped unveil the plaque, which reads. : In memory of Björg Lambrecht, April 2, 1997 - August 5, 2019, stage winner of the Tour des Fjords in Egersund on May 24, 2018.

Lambrecht beat Mitchelton-Scott's Michael Albasini and Dimension Data's Edvald Boasson Hagen in an uphill sprint finish on the third and final stage of the race in the southwest Norwegian town.

The 22-year-old died after crashing on stage 3 of the 2019 Tour de Pollogne between Chorzów and Zabrze. He was immediately taken by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Rybnik, but did not survive due to the severity of his injuries.

Lambrecht was in his second season as a professional rider, joining WorldTour team Lotto Soudal in 2018 from the under-23 development team; he finished second in the 2017 Tour de Lavenir behind 2019 Tour de France winner Egan Bernal, and this April He was fourth in the Flèche Wallonne in April of this year, and then won best young rider at the Criterium du Dauphiné in June, and was widely tipped to be Belgium's next climbing star.

The Tour de Fjord and Tour of Norway were merged ahead of the 2019 season to become a six-day stage race, which Christophe won this year. Race organizers tweeted that Lambrecht's father Kurt had this to say about the plaque: "With this star, Bjorg will shine above Egern forever."
