Tom Dumoulin has fully recovered from the knee injury that ruined his 2019 season, his new team, Jumbo Visma, announced. The Dutchman, who missed most of the season with the injury, has "no restrictions" going forward for the 2020 season.
Merijn Zeeman, coach of the Dutch team, told De Limburger that Dumoulin will be able to train at the same intensity as the other players and will not be adversely affected by the knee.
"His trainer, Mathieu Heijboer, and I, his coach, worked with him extensively. [It's early December, but none of the riders are in the condition they need to be, we'll know more in January. But he is fully taxed again. We are working with him now with the same intensity as any other rider. In any case, I am very optimistic."
Dumoulin injured his knee in a crash on stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia. He finished four minutes behind stage winner Richard Carapace, but was forced to retire the next day.
A month later, he raced six stages of the Criterium du Dauphiné in an attempt to save his season in the Tour de France, but later underwent surgery to remove a fragment of his knee and missed the Tour.
In July, the 29-year-old was diagnosed with a torn tendon, requiring further surgery and ending his 2019 season. A month later, after eight years with Team Sunweb, his move to Jumbo Visma was announced after a painful divorce.
Last Sunday, Dumoulin competed in his first mountain bike race on a Dutch beach since the Giro and linked up with compatriot Steven Kruijswijk and 2019 Vuelta a España winner Primos Roglic for 2020, and the Dutch team will form one of the strongest GC rosters on the World Tour.
In 2020, Dumoulin's main goals were the Tour and the Tokyo Olympics, but recent speculation by La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that Roglic will lead the team in the Tour and Dumoulin will head to the Giro instead.
The team, meanwhile, will finalize its plans at next week's Calpe training camp.
