At a preview event at McLaren's headquarters in Woking, England, the Bahrain McLaren team unveiled its new colors and branding for 2020, showing off its new orange, red, and black kit and matching Merida bikes.
The new clothing is made by British company Le Col, founded by former rider Yanto Barker.
The 2019 Bahrain-Merida team confirmed last week that it will continue its transformation following McLaren's involvement in the team and will race as Team Bahrain-McLaren in 2020. Both the cycling team and the McLaren Group, which includes a Formula 1 team, sports car production, and other technology companies, are controlled by a sovereign wealth fund in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The new colors represent a major departure from the predominantly red kit the team has worn since its inception in 2017. The torso is predominantly orange, while the left shoulder and arm change to red, with blue trim on the sleeves. British neo-pro Fred Wright showed off the new colors in Le Corr's official photos
. We scoured the cycling world with the aim of finding a brand that could offer the best performance kit for the World Tour," said Bahrain McLaren team manager Rod Ellingworth.
Barker said: "The cycling kit design is mature and the time is ripe to destroy it. We are already working hard to develop bespoke kits for some of the toughest stages in next year's biggest races."
The team is also working on a new cycling kit for the next year.
Vincenzo Nibali moved to Trek Segafredo this winter, with new team manager Rod Ellingworth. Bahrain McLaren signed Mark Cavendish, Mikkel Landa, and Wout Poels for 2020, while Tour de France stage winner Dylan Tuns, Phil Bauhaus, and Sonny Colbrelli remain with the team. The team's new additions make up for many of the riders lost during the transfer season. In addition to Nibali, the team fired Rohan Dennis, who quit the Tour de France early.
Team Ineos announced the signing of Dennis hours before Bahrain McLaren unveiled its new colors.
Ivan Cortina unveiled the new colors at McLaren headquarters as Cavendish, Poels, Landa, and other riders looked on, as UCI regulations prevent new riders from wearing Bahrain McLaren's new colors until January 1, 2020, They remained in their tailored suits.
Ellingworth was supported by former British national team member Roger Hammond as performance director and McLaren's Duncan Bradley as technical director. Brent Copeland moves to a new position as Operations Director.
Merida is no longer title sponsor, but remains as bike partner, and the team unveiled a new bike for 2020. Bahrain McLaren will use Shimano components, Prologo saddles, and FSA and Vision bars and stems. Other technical sponsors include Rudy Project helmets and sunglasses, Sidi shoes, Scicon, and Elite.
Other sponsors include Bahrain's national oil company Bapco, cleaning and lubricant brand Muc-off, watch brand Richard Mille, and news broadcaster CNBC. Ties to the Kingdom of Bahrain continue with the support of Mumtalakat, Bahrain Economic Development Board, Batelco, NBB, Alba, First Energy Bank B.S.C., and Lulu Hypermarket. [It is exciting for all involved to join forces with the Bahrain World Tour Cycling Team and challenge the conventions of a sport we love and respect," said John Alert, Co-Managing Director of Team Bahrain McLaren.
"We hope to give cycling enthusiasts something new to cheer about. This is a team built for tomorrow, with great respect for the past." McLaren will bring to the team technology, a culture of continuous improvement, dynamic marketing, and innovation forged in the most technically demanding sport in the world, Formula One. But this is a phenomenally competitive sport, and we do not underestimate either the challenge or the intensity of the competition."
