Mark Cavendish relishes new opportunity at Bahrain McLaren

His three years with Team Dimension Data were plagued by crashes, illness, and poor form.

Mark Cavendish was upbeat ahead of the team's kit and equipment launch at McLaren's technology center in Woking, Surrey, on Monday. He told Cycling News that he is focused and ready for 2020.

"From a personal point of view, it's nice to work with like-minded people. Rod [Ellingworth] is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get involved, and he knows how to get the most out of me. [The team is] hardworking and full of brilliant minds, and with a structure like this and a high performing team, results are inevitable. That makes me happy, excited, and confident."

Cavendish, who was not selected to represent Dimension Data in the Tour de France this year, was at a crossroads and forced to the sidelines.

The 30-time Tour de France stage winner has been tight-lipped about his ambitions for next year and the race calendar, but there is no denying his newfound confidence.

"I haven't decided on next year's program yet, but right now it's about getting through the winter. It's been a good year and I want to make the most of every day."

Cavendish will relish this opportunity to perform at his best, especially as part of a team like McLaren, where winning races, not second or third place, is part of the culture. According to team principal Ellingworth, "Planning to win a race is part of the process and requires precise planning and execution."

The team's goal is to win the race by the end of the season.

Only time will tell if the Manxman can take away Eddy Merckx's record of 34 Tour de France stage wins, but given Cavendish's competitive nature and never-give-up attitude, he is sure to be a force to be reckoned with at next June 27 in Nice. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cavendish in the team's new papaya orange kit at the Grande Pearl.

One thing is certain: Bahrain McLaren is a team on a mission, and every rider is a crucial cog in a well-oiled machine.

"Having raced for some of the biggest teams in cycling, I've seen the little things that make them successful. I know they are in a good position in terms of performance.

"I'm excited about the team. The atmosphere and team spirit is great and we feel like one unit."

"The team has been very successful.

The team will head to Hvar, Croatia next week for its first training camp before traveling to Australia for the Tour Down Under, the first race of the 2020 season.
