Sutherland breaks leg after falling on electric scooter during Israeli training camp

Israel Startup Nation rider Rory Sutherland, who was at a training camp in Tel Aviv, Israel, crashed on his electric scooter and broke his leg.

The Australian rider was returning to the team's hotel after a meal in the city on Tuesday evening when he hit a curb on the sidewalk and dismounted from his scooter.

He was taken to Ichilov General Hospital later that night and underwent upper femur surgery on Wednesday afternoon.

"He used his scooter on the way back from the city and unfortunately went towards the curb," team manager Kjell Carlström told Cycling News. 'The other riders didn't seem to think it was that serious. But, well, that's the way it is." [The prognosis is not yet known, but he has already had surgery. Hopefully, we'll know more in a few hours and we'll know exactly what the situation is."

Sutherland was forced to miss the Israel Startup Nation team presentation on Wednesday due to the injury and is certain to miss several months of the 2020 season.

Sutherland, an Australian, has joined Israel Startup Nation for the 2020 season. He joins on a one-year contract from UAE Team Emirates, where he will serve as team leader along with Dan Martin.

Sutherland, now 37, has been a professional since 2005 and has ridden for Rabobank, United Healthcare, Tinkoff, Movistar, and UAE Team Emirates during his 15-year career.
