Alley BTC Ljubljana unveiled its new yellow and orange kit at a team presentation on Tuesday. The team will be given the top license for the Women's World Team starting in 2020 and will be led by Italian road race champion Marta Bastianelli.
Formerly known as Ale Cipollini, management announced in September that it had signed Slovenian company BTC as its second title sponsor, and the team name was changed to Ale BTC Ljubljana from 2020.
Bastianelli spent three seasons (2016-2018) with Ale Cipollini before moving to Bjarne Riis' Team Virtue Cycling in 2019, where he won the Tour de Flanders. After Riis announced that Team Virtue Cycling would disband at the end of the season, she made the decision to return to the Allee team.
The UCI will launch a new two-tier team system next year with eight WorldTeams and the rest Continental teams. In applying to become a Women's WorldTeam, teams must provide athletes with a minimum salary, social and health benefits, and teams must be able to guarantee sponsorship for four years.
The partnership with BTC and re-signing with Bastianelli were part of the team's push to secure a Women's WorldTeam license through the 2023 season.
"This is a historic day for Italian cycling and for our team: thanks to the great help of the management, sponsors, and staff, a dream that has been in the works for over a year has finally become a reality. Together with Alessia Piccolo, the Allee team, and our new main sponsor BTC Ljubljana, we have worked hard to achieve what seemed difficult and almost impossible. We are grateful to those who allowed us to become a big team," said team manager Fortunato Laccaniti.
Yale BTC Ljubljana will participate in a training camp in Spain from December 12 to December 19.
The UCI has selected seven of the eight Women's World Teams that represent the highest level of the new two-team system that will start in 2020. These teams are Canyon-Slam, Allee BTC Ljubljana, CCC-Liv, FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope, Movistar Team Women, Team Sunweb, and Trek-Segafredo.
Mitchelton-Scott was left off the list of prestigious teams. The team's license is pending approval after further evaluation by the UCI.
