Trek-Segafredo's men's and women's teams held a winter training camp in Sicily, complete with massages, bike fitting sessions, base test planning, and preparation for the fast approaching 2020 season.
The Trek-Segafredo men's and women's teams operate under a shared staff and resource structure, which has brought more than 100 athletes and staff to the I Monastery Golf Resort a few kilometers inland from Siracusa on Sicily's west coast. Only players enjoying winter in Australia and the United States were absent, including Richie Porto, Kane DeColt, Keir Lynan, Toms Squins, Taylor Wiles, Ruth Winder, and Lauretta Hanson.
New signee Lucinda Brand was also passed over to focus on cyclocross racing, but neo-pro athletes such as Elinor Backstedt, Charlie Quarterman, and junior men's world champion Quinn Simmons (USA) were all able to see how the Trek Segafredo Trek Segafredo was welcomed on the fast track to see how it worked.
Mads Pedersen's world champion rainbow jersey stood out in the outdoor bike area among the fluorescent training kit and the new blue and white racing colors of Bauke Mollema, Yasper Steiven, and Giulio Ciccone, per UCI rules, Vincenzo Nibali and his brother Antonio, Kenny Elissonde, and other newly signed riders for 2020 had to wear the 2019 colors. But it was clear that the team was already coming together for 2020.
Having the two teams together created a lively atmosphere throughout the golf resort, but having the men's and women's teams together seemed to create a more relaxed and open atmosphere, with players and staff spending time together and having fun in between all the hard work.
The riders gathered in Sicily at the beginning of the week and spent the first three days focusing on media, sponsors, and other non-riding activities. Interviews, presentations to sponsors, tests, and photo shoots took place along with training on the quiet Sicilian countryside roads.
The camp will continue until December 20, with several blocks of serious training. In particular, those competing for the Classics and those who will start the 2020 season early in Australia will be subjected to more intensive and intense workloads.
