Geraint Thomas showed that he is already training long and hard for the 2020 season with a 309-km run through Mallorca on Sunday at Team Ineos' winter training camp.
Last year, after months of celebrating his 2018 Tour de France win, he struggled to find his early season form and race weight, but this year he seems to have no such issues, and his Garmin bike showing that he covered the 309.km distance in 8:35, at an average speed of 36 km/h He posted a photo of the computer.
Some of Team Ineos' teammates completed the race with Thomas, while others circumnavigated the Balearic Islands. [Also, Italy's Filippo Ganna completed the 167 km in 5.5 hours. Michał Kwiatkowski covered just 67 km, and newcomer Richard Kalapas covered 93 km. Britain's Ethan Hayter ran 181 km in nearly 6 hours in preparation for his debut with Team Ineos in 2020.
Team Ineos began its annual winter gathering last week and will stay until just before Christmas to base train and plan and prepare for the 2020 season.
The team traditionally stays in Alcudia, in the northern part of the island, where the 309-km loop started and ran along the hilly roads of the north coast towards Sorel before heading south to complete the loop. According to social media photos, the riders completed the loop in the dark after more than eight hours in the saddle. Thomas and some of his teammates trained in orange fluorescent clothing to stand out on the road.
Team Ineos has not yet finalized its goals and leadership plan for 2020.
Chris Froome has expressed a desire to target the Tour de France as a recovery goal after suffering multiple fractures at the Criterium du Dauphiné. Tour de France winner Egan Bernal has said he would like to compete in the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. Carapas will likely defend his Giro d'Italia title in 2020, but little is known about Thomas' plans or his place in the Team Ineos Grand Tour hierarchy.
Last week, Vincenzo Nibali, who is targeting the Giro d'Italia with his new Trek-Segafredo team, told Cycling News that he thinks Thomas will run the Italian Grand Tour.
Thomas recently became a father for the first time when his wife, Sarah, gave birth to their son, Max, in early October.
Thomas has suggested that he may target the 2020 Giro d'Italia, suggesting that he "will be able to get out of bed in the morning."
"I'm going to wait, at least until I see the Giro and Tour courses and routes.
"I'm definitely not going to make a decision until at least the training camp in December."
