Geraint Thomas: I have my sights set on the 2020 Tour de France

According to a report in The Guardian, Geraint Thomas (Team Ineos) has revealed that he is aiming for the 2020 Tour de France. The 2018 Tour de France winner has not yet finalized his race schedule, but will start on June 27 in Nice He said he hopes to participate in the French Grand Tour.

"I'm thinking about the Tour as a goal," Thomas told the Guardian. 'We need to check and discuss everything.'

Team Ineos has had multiple leaders in the Tour de France in recent years; Thomas won the 2018 Tour de France, while Chris Froome, the previous four-time winner, finished third. This year, team newcomer Egan Bernal won his first Tour de France, while Thomas, hoping to defend his title, finished second.

Thomas told The Guardian that he was frustrated by Bernal's rise this year, especially after spending many seasons as Froome's support rider in the Tour de France before that.

"Yes, to be honest," Thomas said. ''When you have a good rider [on the team], it's obvious.'' [Teamwork is a necessity. It's a team sport, and those two guys are special."

"Froome is the greatest Grand Tour rider of his generation and Bernal is ..... .to win the Tour at the age of 22, he's going to be super competitive for 10 or 12 years. But at least I have a Tour win in me."

Thomas said he felt confident in this year's Tour de France and was disappointed to miss out on a second straight win. He said he felt the outcome of the race was an unknown after stage 19 was shortened and hail and ice fell in Tignes.

Despite the unknowns of the 2019 Tour de France, Thomas said he was proud of his second place behind Bernal.

"Being second in the (2019) Tour makes me happy and proud, but at the time I was disappointed," Thomas said. 'From the start, the way the season went, the off-season. The build-up was totally different from 2018, but I still felt confident."

"The stage cancellation [in the Alps] and the shortened day was disappointing. The unknowns remain. I can't say that Egan shouldn't have won, but there are a few unknowns."

If Team Ineos allows Thomas to compete in the 2020 Tour de France, he could find himself alongside defending champion Bernal and Froome, who is looking for his fifth title. Froome did not compete in this year's Tour de France after being seriously injured in a major crash at the Criterium du Dauphiné.

While there may be an opportunity for Thomas to race as the sole team leader of Team Ineos at the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, he said there is no chance he will compete in the Italian and Spanish Grand Tours next year.

"You have to weigh your position in the team and what motivates you," Thomas said. 'It doesn't make sense to go to the Giro just to be a leader, and I'm only 95% motivated. You have to give it your all. But I want to be in the Tour next year."
