Nicholas Dlamini (NTT Pro Cycling) broke his arm when he collided with a SANParks Ranger while training in Cape Town on Friday. The South African rider was taken to a nearby hospital, where X-rays revealed that the lower end of his left humerus was fractured just above the elbow.
Dlamini was training in the Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park when disturbing video footage showed him being forcefully seized by one of four Table Mountain National Park rangers at the side of the road.
Video footage of the incident went viral on social media, causing outrage. The park rangers then twisted Dlamini's left arm behind his back until a "snapping" sound could be heard.
The park ranger then roughly moved Dlamini, who appeared to be doubled over in pain, to the back seat of the van, opened the rear trunk door, and placed Dlamini in one of the back seats.
"We are aware of a video of one of our riders, Nick Dlamini, being involved in an incident in Cape Town earlier today," said a statement released on NTT Pro Cycling's official Twitter account.
"He is currently undergoing medical evaluation and will then be able to provide a full update on what happened."
SANParks, the conservation authority, released a statement claiming that Dlamini entered Table Mountain National Park through Gate 1 in the Silvermine area without paying conservation fees and without presenting proof of permission to operate when requested.
"Table Mountain National Park rangers were informed of the incident and upon investigation found the cyclist unable to present either an entry ticket or a valid activity permit, the situation escalated and the suspect was injured during the ordeal," the statement read.
SANParks indicated that it would collect statements from Dlamini as well as from the rangers who were on the scene.
Donovan Le Cok, who shot video footage of the incident, stated that he was not riding with Dlamini at the time, but that he saw riders training on Silvermine Road.
In a post on Twitter, Le Cok stated that when Dlamini got off to leave the park, a group of six officials grabbed the bars of his bike and tried to stop him.
"That caused him to fall and get hurt," Le Coq said. Nick got up and faced the Senior Ranger (the large man in the video who eventually assaulted him)."
Le Coq said he decided to film the incident after seeing the situation between the Park Ranger and Dlamini begin to escalate.
"A large senior ranger punched the skinny little Nick. 'Then he turned him around and twisted him until his arm broke. There was a loud bang and Nick screamed. Nick kept screaming, 'My arm is broken, my arm is broken. Then the officials threw Nick into the back of a van".
"I stopped shooting when the officials started getting aggressive towards me.
Dlamini turned pro with Dimension Data's Continental team in 2016; he moved to the World Tour team as a trainee in 2017 and spent the next two seasons there. He also joined the new NTT Pro Cycling team in 2020.
When video of the incident between SANParks Rangers and Dlamini circulated on social media channels, cyclists expressed outrage, including four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome.
"Apparently [Nic Dlamini] "injured himself. Table Mountain National Park is terrible," Froome posted on Twitter.
Ashley Moolman-Pasio, a multiple-time winner in South Africa, also expressed disappointment in the way the SANParks rangers treated Dlamini.
"Very sad to see this. The worst behavior of an official. [Nick] is one of the nicest guys I know. He does not deserve this kind of treatment. I wish him a speedy recovery," she posted on her Twitter account.
